Chechen Refugee

The Russo-Chechen conflict; a conflict that is in danger of becoming not just a byword for gratuitous violence, but also for a profoundly disturbing indifference to the suffering of civilians. The images of the Russo-Chechen conflict are some of the most harrowing of modern times. The calamity in Chechen Republic has been perverse, and unfortunately it is almost inconceivable that this conflict will ever reach a peaceful solution –– due to conflicting cultural negations, such as Russia’s reluctance to sweep aside its economic interests in the region, and the Chechen rebels’ aversion to negotiate for anything less than complete independence. Past events, i.e. the deportations of almost the entire Chechen population, the Chechen wars and the Beslan Massacre, have indisputably cemented the intractability of this ongoing conflict.
